Some say that the Internet is so enjoyable that it is almost addictive. The problem is that researchers are beginning to agree with them. Studies are revealing that there may be an actual form of addiction involved with over-use of the Internet. Identifying which category of addiction the Internet falls into is the problem. There are no real answers yet because research in this area is at the beginning stages. While lost in this so called ?Cyber Community' for long periods of time, people are neglecting other important activities like; time with the family, socializing, work and health concerns. One of the most extensive studies on Internet Addiction to date was conducted by Dr. Kimberly S. Young of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. In her study, she revealed concrete evidence supporting the Internet Addiction claim. However, help for web addicts is available. There are several web sites available for the treatment of Internet addiction, as well as counseling centers and clinics. Is it Live, or is it Internet? Internet Addiction The Internet is the largest most versatile source of information in the world today. With its web sites and chat rooms, it is a means of communicating with people in places all over the face of the earth. But with all this power at our fingertips, are there any negative impacts of using this interface? Are we as ?simple humans' capable of interacting with such a powerful communication source. Recent studies are beginning to uncover evidence that would suggest that maybe some of us are not so capable of dealing with this technology. In fact, as more research is conducted, experts are finding that the Internet may even be addictive! Development of the Internet began about 15 years ago. In 1973 the U.S. Defense Research Projects Agency initiated a program to research the techniques and technologies for inter-linking various types of networks.1 The objective was to develop communication protocols that would allow networked computers to communicate transparently across multiple, linked networks. This was called the internetting project and the system of networks that emerged from the research was known as the Internet. Since that time, various other research projects, to include those conducted by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, have shaped and tailored this project to give us the Internet as we know it today. (1) The Internet has now grown to include over 4500 Service Providers in the United States alone. A survey by Christian Huitema of Bellcore indicated that there were 26 million host computers on the Internet as of September 1997.2 A survey conducted by Intelli Quest Information Group Inc. showed that 51 million adults, age 16 or older, were on-line as of the second quarter 1997 in the United States alone.3 With such a large portion of the population swimming in this seemingly never-ending sea of information, what is the real impact of the Internet on society? It seems that the majority of society thinks the Internet is the greatest invention since the telephone. This is probably best justified by the whirlwind rate at which the Internet grows. In fact, some say that the Internet is so enjoyable that it is almost addicting! The problem is that recent studies have shown that the Internet may not only be addicting because it is enjoyable, but that a fairly large number of users are experiencing addiction of a clinical form.4 Identifying which category of addiction the Internet falls into is another problem. There are no real answers yet because research in this area is at the beginning stages. A few researchers are comparing the Internets effects to marijuana as a psychostimulant. They argue that the chemicals in marijuana activate the same stimuli as the Internet.5 Most researchers to this date do, however, agree that this is some type of behavioral addiction. People can become addicted to activities even when there is no physiological dependence or physiological addiction. Overeating, sex, work, exercise and gambling can be addictive if done to excess.6 Behavioral addiction means (2) that the activity alters your emotional state in some way. The

Dian Fossey essays
Dian Fossey essays Dian Fossey and the Mountain Gorilla The mountain gorilla was first discovered in 1902 by Captain von Beringe in Rwanda. These creatures were described as tall man-like apes and little was known about them until George Schaller spent a year examining them and wrote the book The year of the Gorilla. It was this book that inspired a young Dian Fossey to learn more about mountain gorillas. Dian Fossey was born in 1932 and studied at Jose State University graduating as an occupational therapist. Upon graduation Dian found a job at the Kosair Childrens Hospital in Kentucky. Dian enjoyed her job but she longed to see the rest of the world. By borrowing money she was able to finance a trip to Africa to visit the excavations at Olduvia and the mountain gorillas of the Virunga Volcanoes. In 1963 Dian set out to Africa. It was during this trip where she met Dr. Louis Leakey. Leakey was one of the most well known paleoanthropologists in the world and was heading the excavations at Olduvia. Dian experienced her first contact with mountain gorillas when she hiked up a 10 000 foot volcano. She fell in love with the magnificence of the gentle creatures. This is where she found her lifes work. Dian returned home and wrote about her experiences in Africa to the Louisville Courier Journal. In 1966 she attended a conference where she met Dr. Leakey again. Dr. Leakey offered Dian a chance to observe mountain gorillas in a long-term study similar to Jane Goodalls study of chimpanzees of Gombe. Even though Dian had no formal training in the study of animal behavior Leakey was interested in her ambition and determination to the job. Dian accepted the job and with Leakeys funding she left for Africa in 1966. Once Dian was settled in the Congo she began her study of the giant apes. First she would try to sneak up on them and quietly observe them. Then she changed her method and announced her presence ...

Storytelling, the Meaning of life and The Epic of Gilgamesh Research Paper
Storytelling, the Meaning of life and The Epic of Gilgamesh - Research Paper Example A., ââ¬Å"Story Telling, the Meaning of Life, and the Epic of Gilgameshâ⬠). The close inspection of these lines will lead the readers of Arthur. A. Brown to the life that is between realms of mortality and immortality. The switching of codes between the imagination and pragmatism is what we call life. This is the underlying vision of the author and so he focuses that any story can easily launch us to a world of imagination which can be termed as an escapade from the harsh realities of life but then it is always essential because it refreshes our mind, soul and body. According to the author here lies the greatness or importance of story telling and this code switching between the mortal and the immortal world is the true essence of life. According to Arthur, stories are informative and they inform us about life and death and sometimes life after death and with a commendable rhetorical description of the story of Gilgamesh, he describes this in his essay. To the narrator, the story of Gilgamesh is not merely an ancient story telling about the life of a king and people living in the land between Tigris and Euphrates, also it is not a parable of their lifestyle, myth and beliefs but much more. It is a story about something beyond our comprehension which author describes in his essay as ââ¬Å"things we cannot fixâ⬠. These are the things which are beyond the day ââ¬â to ââ¬â day life of the people living in the second and third millennium BCE and worshiping a king called Gilgamesh, but by delving deep into the epic. One can find out, according to Arthur, the reconciliation between human and mortality. One must try to understand things beyond his perceptions and our reflections regarding story telling. Relat ing life with a story is the greatest work and to successfully fit into the scheme of a characterââ¬â¢s action is the utmost transcendental phenomena in life, views Arthur. The title of the essay is aptly suitable for bearing the crown of being the

Economic Growth in the UK Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Economic Growth in the UK - Essay Example Since the phenomenon of globalization has become ubiquitous in the new neoliberal world order of the last few decades, it would be instructive to study aforementioned determinants within the framework of international capitalism. This particular form of capitalism has steadily replaced socialistic and communistic forms of economic arrangement in many countries in the world. While proponents of this global economic model argue that this is the best possible system, there are also those who strongly oppose various aspects of this system. Taking a historical perspective, we see that the events of the two centuries are shaped and defined by the practice of capitalism. While conceding that concentrations of power and finance in and of themselves do not lead to oppression and injustice, empirical evidence of the workings of the capitalist model suggests such an outcome. Similarly, while neoliberal economic paradigm might have improved the Gross National Products (including that of the UK) of individual nations and improved the general standards of living, there are other aspects of human well-being that is not easily measured and fulfilled (Dixon, 1998, p.125). For instance, when assessing economic systems and determinants of economic growth, it is only logical to consider the consequences to the environment alongside measures of human standard of living. There is an emerging consensus among intellectuals and research scholars that there is indeed a strong correlation between the two concepts.

Fathers and Sons - The Quarrel - Chapter 10 Essay Example for Free
Fathers and Sons The Quarrel Chapter 10 Essay Chapter ten begins with Arkady and Bazarov discussing Nikolai and his outdatedness, Nikolai consulting his brother Pavel about the same issue follows this. These two events barely fit into the same chapter as the quarrel that occurs next. Bazarov and Pavel have not gotten along since they met and share different views on basically everything. Pavel loathes Bazarovs nihilist attitude and Bazarov, being a nihilist doesnt care much for Pavels aristocratic nature either. They have both been burning to have an argument, especially Pavel who was just waiting for a spark to start a flame. When the conversation drifted to one of the neighboring landowners Pavel noticed his chance and uses this as a catalyst to start the conversation about nihilism and their different viewpoints. As the two men begin dueling it is noticeable how both seem to be trained advocates. Their questions are brief and their answers to the point and dont give away too much. Bazarov seems to not care less about what is happening whereas Pavel seems to be dripping with enthusiasm. Pavel acts as more of an interrogator than Bazarov and begins the argument by stating his opposing viewpoint of aristocratism which Bazarov mocks so plainly. Both men have their dignity at this point and although Pavel seems pressured not much tension is in the atmosphere. I do not share the same opinion, said Pavel igniting the debate. Bazarov then asks Pavel what can be proved about the supposed superiority of the aristocrats. Though Pavel does answer the challenge I feel Bazarov is trying to change the subject when he chooses to personalize the argument and begins to talk about what the point of all of Pavels trouble is. He implies that Pavel doesnt achieve anything in his life and so his aristocratic way of life has been a useless one with no progress. Although this is clearly personal to Pavel I dont feel as if Bazarov was purposely trying to attack Pavels life and ridicule it. Unsurprisingly Pavel is offended and retorts, losing some of his dignity. He makes another personal statement towards Bazarov saying that only ignorant or stupid people would live without the principals that aristocrats preach; he is directly implying that Bazarov is ignorant and stupid. This argument I feel was more of a personal statement made towards Bazarov rather than a good argument to debate over, however Bazarov retains his dignity and moves to another topic, naming a few words used in aristocracy and labeling them as utter nonsense. At this point I think Bazarov is winning the argument, as Pavel seems confused and temporarily overwhelmed by Bazarovs questions. But Pavel does do the right thing next by asking Bazarov what he feels should be done about the situation, but again Pavel adds another personal statement at the end of his argument saying that if Bazarovs views were put into effect the Russian people shall find ourselves beyond the pale of humanity, outside human laws. Next more of Pavels dignity is stolen as they describe to him exactly what a nihilist does and does not do. Turgenev clearly states that Pavel is overwhelmed by the definition of nihilism and what plans they have for Russia. In his view it is as if Pavel underestimated their ignorance. Bazarov says that at present time the most useful thing that can be done by the Russian people is to deny. To deny authority, principals, art, everything. I fail to understand how much can be gained by this, Bazarovs theory is that all that has been built must be destroyed in order to construct a new life which the people want. Although I feel Bazarov is running a better argument I dont agree with his philosophy and feel that instead of denying everything an attempt can be made at just trying to change what has been built instead of destroying it and reconstructing it from scratch. Pavel continues to lose his temper and his arguments get worse as he loses his dignity and begins acting childlike. To reply to Bazarov and Arkadys description of the Russian people he says No, no! I cant believe that you young men really know the Russian people, that you represent their needs and aspirations! No, the Russian people are not what you imagine them to be. They hold tradition sacred, they are a patriarchal people, they cannot live without faith . . . This sentence with its abundance of nos sounds very childlike and most of it seems as if Pavel is trying to tell himself rather than the others that what they say is not true. Bazarov still contains full dignity and as adultly as possible agrees to ease Pavel, but he still refuses to admit if he is wrong. Then he states that although Pavel may be right it still proves nothing. His next argument is basic, but effective, Pavel says that in that case Bazarov must be going against his own people and Bazarov replies with an analogy that implies that according to Pavel if the majority of the people do something utterly stupid he must do so as well. Pavel ignores the last argument made by Bazarov and instead chooses to retaliate by attacking Bazarov by saying he is not part of the Russian people after he opposes them in so many ways. Bazarov handles this argument simply by referring to the most Russian people he knows, the peasants, who have knowledge of the past peasants who have risen and become of higher status now. Bazarov, as we have seen earlier in the book, talks to the peasants and doesnt mind answering their questions and talking to them. Although he may look down on them and not think much of them he still treats them like people and so they will obviously support him on this one so Pavel made bad move by challenging how Russian Bazarov is as he has more to show for it than Pavel. But again I do feel that comparing Pavel to himself was unnecessary and just made the argument more personal again. There is a short break in the chapter as Nikolai stands up and tries to cool the two down asking them not to make this personal. He is a bit late. With Nikolais interference Pavel has a chance to compose himself and regain some of the dignity he had had before. They start to discuss nihilism once again with a cooler and less tense atmosphere. Bazarov gives another definition for nihilism, this time focusing more on their actions as a group. They then begin to talk about the strength of the nihilists, which Pavel is proved to have underestimated. I agree with Bazarovs view here that a large number is not needed, but rather a stronger faith or force in what they are doing as the truth to be stronger then a large number. Although slightly irrelevant Bazarovs analogy to a single candle burning down the whole of Moscow, I feel was a strong argument. Pavel seems to lose his dignity along with the argument as he again starts acting restless and angered. Pavel then loses all dignity when he starts to be sarcastic saying Bravo, bravo! and trying to make what Bazarov is saying foolish by pretending to acknowledge it. His loss of dignity is made clear with Bazarovs statement You have departed from your praiseworthy sense of personal dignity and with this Bazarov chooses to close the argument, but not without his closing sentence in which he asks Pavel to think of institutions where the aristocracy has had an outcome of no problems. Pavel attempts to name a few but is proven wrong by Bazarov for his attempts. Bazarov once again asks Pavel to take his time and think about it; with this he takes his leave and the discussion comes to an end. Bazarov is clearly a powerful advocate who can maintain his dignity even when he is criticized and although many people oppose his views he has managed to keep his views alive. Pavel, although a good attempt would make a weaker advocate, his weaknesses lie in his quick temper. Maintaining your cool is very important and Bazarov proved that, he left the argument with all his dignity and my vote as the winner whereas Pavel was left tongue-tied and labeled as the loser.

Traditions in A Moment Before the Gun Went Off and The Lottery :: Shirley Jackson Lottery
In the stories "A Moment before The Gun Went Off" and "The Lottery," there is the situation in which a group of people cling to traditions very blindly. In both stories the traditions are so dug into the people's way of life that questioning them is considered sacrilege within these communities. Furthermore, the members of the community no longer even remember why the traditions were set up in the fist place. They follow the traditions simply because their predecessors followed the traditions. Another similarity between the communities in both stories is, even though these traditions are firmly entrenched in these communities, they are rapidly losing there grip in other communities. This detail is not only mentioned in both stories, but looked down upon by communities that still follow the traditions. In the story "The Lottery," the tradition is to hold a lottery on a specific summer day, but instead of winning a cash prize or some other good thing, the winner gets to be stoned to death by the members of the community. The character that is mentioned most in this story is one by the name of Mrs. Hutchinson. Mrs. Hutchinson is a devoted mother and housewife. She is the one who eventually gets singled out to win the lottery. So it is Mrs. Hutchinson who is impacted the most brutally by the lottery. However the other people of the village are affected differently by the lottery. It is very unlikely that the people of the village kill people for the sake of killing people. More likely there is a deeper reason. One possibility is that the people of this village of this village are looking for a scapegoat. A person to take the blame for mistakes and sins of others, so one person dies for a community and saves the community from whatever sins that had been committed. The society can be affected in many ways by the lottery. Other neighbor societies have been affected by the lottery, many have abandoned the tradition of the lottery. Even in the community where the story takes place many of the rituals that go along with the lottery are fading into the past to be forgotten forever. An example of this would be the chant that originally went with the

The Patriot Act
After the United States was attacked in the infamous 9/11 episode, the United States enacted the United States of 2001 on October 24, 2001 (Mil Net, 2001). The law was passed without any objections to the passage of the law, and was signed by President Bush on October 26 of the same year (Encarta, 2008). The Patriot Act is considered as the centerpiece legislation of the United States' response to the September 11, 2001 tragedy (John Gamboa, 2008).The law by its defintion is a tool that aims to strengthen the instruments of the law enforcement arms of the state, especially its police and prosecutin arms, with the goal of preventing attacks of this kind in the future (Encarta, 2008). The act itself lays out specific rules on surveillance, intelligence gathering and sharing among law enforcement units, money laundering, security at entrance and exit points of the country and criminal law among others (Gamboa, 2008).In conjuction with the applicability of other statutes, has in fact giv en more foundation to the civil freedoms and rights of people (Paul Rosenweig, Alane Kochems & James Jay Carafano, 2004). To prevent abuse, the Act has been one of the most extensive reporting procedures attached on any law (Rosenweig, Kochems & Carafano, 2004). But the question lies not in the benefits, but whether the law should be encated as is, with amendments or totally scrapped. Many critics of the Act have demonized the legislation as an instrument of abuse and a threat to individual rights (Paul Rosenweig, 2004).In the lifetime of the Act, many of the provisions in the law have either been amended, changed and re-worded to effect changes in the law to make it adapt to broader changes to attain less then defined and specific goals (Gamboa, 2008). But after all the smoke of critcism has cleared, one thing is still evident, the Act is still a very important tool in the fight against terrorism (Rosenweig, 2004). In the past, law enforcement groups were limited in the amount and quality of information that they could pass on to each other. The Act virtually did away with that limitation (Rosenweig, 2004).In this light, a majority of Americans, about 60 percent, are in favor of re-enacting that Act, but oppose any additional powers given to entities like the Federal Bureau of Investigation, like access to electronic mail, issuing subpoenas (Gary Langer, 2005) and to limit the access or rights of immigrants on U. S soil (New York Civil Liberties Union, 2005). Congress, basing on the utility of the Act, must enact the Act, subject to thorough study and discussion. Under the current ambit of the law, it is the people of the United States that are more apprehensive of the law than the intended terrorist targets (Gamboa, 2008).Many of the oppositors of the Act even claim that the law was just a cover for some law enforcement agencies to obtain the new expanded powers in the Act (Encarta, 2008). But again, the law and its effects would be more beneficial than the percieved threats to the citizenry (Rosenweig, Kochems & Carafano, 2004). And that is where the powers and wisdom of the members of Congress must step in to review and take action against the threats that the Act has seemed to conjure up (Rosenweig, Kochems & Carafano, 2004). The Parito Act reader: understanding the law's role in the global war on terrorism. Retriieved September 25, 2008, from http://www. heritage. org/Research/HomelandDefense/upload/69895_1. pdf The Patriot Act The United States 9/11 attack has marked a significant event in the history. The attack against USA was a proof that even strong and imperialist countries are never safe at any time. It has severely damaged the US reputation and challenged them further ââ¬â economically, politically and socially. This system reluctance has made citizens and government more vigilant of their safety, and consequently it led US into formally launching laws and policies that aimed to strengthen their defenses against terrorist activities.Immediately following the 9/11 attack, the US government was fast into amending the US Patriotic Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism). This act contains 157 sections, which includes legal responses to assist terrorist victims, protect civilians from fake solicitations, and provide benefits for public safety (Perez, 2003).The act gave more ability to the law enforcement bodies to investigat e on cases suspected to involve local and foreign terrorist activities, more power to target monetary transactions that possibly induced terrorist connections and filter against all electronic communication devices that may be infiltrated by terrorist activities (Gable). According to the US government and its supporters, the US Patriot Act shall be able to reveres terrorism efforts and effects in several ways:(1) The Patriot Act allows investigators to use the tools that were already available to investigate organized crime and drug trafficking; (2) The Patriot Act facilitated information sharing and cooperation among government agencies so that they can better ââ¬Å"connect the dots. ââ¬Å"; (3) The Patriot Act updated the law to reflect new technologies and new threats and; (4) The Patriot Act increased the penalties for those who commit terrorist crimes (The USA Patriotic Act: Preserving Life and Liberty, pp.1-4). However, several years have passed since the attack and since th e start of the implementation of the act, numerous claims of its inefficacy have emerged; moreover, instead of its benefits being publicized, its negative implications and results are rather more rampant. Shortly two years since the 9/11 occurrence, and even right at the moment that we speak, numerous cases of violations of human liberties have bee n reported to have thwarted the civilian.More so, it has nourished the feeling of discontent and dissent over concerned citizens as the act continued its ââ¬Å"rampage against terrorism. â⬠What the act has merely done is to limit the privacy of the civilians. The act has legalized all sorts of interferences towards the private messages and way of communication that every individual goes through against their will, and even behind private citizensââ¬â¢ knowledge and consent (Kranich, 2003).The act, though it has indeed signaled the intensified battle against terrorism, it has also catered the arena that strengthened the backbone for government intervention against private citizens. Ironically though, the same provisions that are supposedly and potentially to be of important use in order to eliminate terrorist activities, are the same provisions that have suppressed the liberty of individuals and have further violated human rights in a number of ways.Amidst the oppositions from concerned groups against the passage and the continuity of the amendment, still the US government pursued its interest to counter terrorism even against the will and support of a large part of the American citizens, as well as other citizens around the world. Now, looking back at the instances starting from the attack, towards the end wherein the US legalized such provisions for the US Patriot Act ââ¬â it is only rational to take a look on what it has caused and asses if the result was worth taking the risk once more if the provisions of the act are to be renewed.Personally, if I were to take a vote on whether the act should be re newed, I would rather have it reassessed first and point out the blunders that have caused too much opposition against it. At one point, the act was passed under limited time and too much pressure from the international community as it was enacted shortly after the 9/11 attack, it is enough to say that it was passed without proper deliberations (Van Bergen, 2002) Moreover, changes are really ought to be done in order to create a just and equal standpoint in battling against terrorism. One thing that should be changed is the utter disrespect against individual liberty that it encourages. Anything that directly and deliberately limits and suppresses the freedom and privacy of an individual must be opposed just because of mere suspicions. If anything must be done that shall violate the rights of the individuals, proper investigation must take recourse and until sufficient information are gathered, no one holds the right to interfere against anyoneââ¬â¢s privacy.Though the US Patriot Act was implemented in its goal to counter terrorist attacks and to further protect the welfare of the American citizens, as well as other citizens in world but, it should not be forgotten that the basic right to freedom of the individuals should not be put at stake. Countrywide safety is really important, however, to totally violate the human rights is also as dangerous as what terrorism can bring, thus justifying the changes, if not the repeal of the US Patriot Act. 6 Interesting Facts About the Hispanic Population
Facts and figures about the Hispanic American population reveal it is not only the largest ethnic minority group in the United States but also one of the most complex. Individuals of any race (black, white, Native American) identify as Latino. Hispanics in the U.S. trace their roots to a variety of continents, speak a variety of languages and practice a variety of customs. As the Latino population grows, the American publicââ¬â¢s knowledge about Hispanics grows as well. In this effort, the U.S. Census Bureau compiled statistics about Latinos in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month that shed light on where Latinos are concentrated in the United States, how much the Latino population has grown and the strides Latinos have made in sectors such as business. Latinos face challenges as well; they remain underrepresented in higher education and suffer from high rates of poverty. As Latinos gain more resources and opportunities, expect them to excel. Population Boom With 52 million Americans identifying as Hispanic, Latinos make up 16.7% of the U.S. population. From 2010 to 2011 alone, the number of Hispanics in the country jumped by 1.3 million, a 2.5% increase. By 2050, the Hispanic population is expected to reach 132.8 million, or 30% of the projected U.S. population at that time. The Hispanic population in the U.S. in 2010 was the largest in the world outside of Mexico, which has a population of 112 million. Mexican Americans are the largest Latino group in the U.S., making up 63% of Hispanics in the nation. Next in line are Puerto Ricans, who make up 9.2% of the Hispanic population, and Cubans, who make up 3.5% of Hispanics. Hispanic Concentration in the U.S. Where are Hispanics concentrated in the country? More than 50% of Latinos call three states (California, Florida, and Texas) home. But New Mexico stands out as the state with the largest proportionà of Hispanics,à makingà up 46.7% of the state. Eight states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Texas) have Hispanic populations of at least 1 million. Los Angeles County boasts the highest number of Latinos, with 4.7 million Hispanics. Eighty-two of the countryââ¬â¢s 3,143 counties were majority-Hispanic. Flourishing in Business From 2002 to 2007, the number of Hispanic-owned businesses in 2007 jumped by 43.6% to 2.3 million. During that time frame, they grossed $350.7 billion, which represents a 58% jump between 2002 and 2007. The state of New Mexico leads the nation in Hispanic-owned businesses. There, 23.7% of businesses are Hispanic-owned. Next in line is Florida, where 22.4% of businesses are Hispanic-owned, and Texas, where 20.7% are. Challenges in Education Latinos have advances to make in education. In 2010, just 62.2% of Hispanics aged 25 and up had a high school diploma. In contrast, from 2006 to 2010, 85% of Americans aged 25 and up had graduated from high school. In 2010, only 13% of Hispanics had obtained at least a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree. More than double that proportion of Americans generally (27.9%) had obtained a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree or a graduate degree. In 2010, only 6.2% of college students were Latino. That same year just more than a million Hispanics held advanced degrees. Overcoming Poverty Hispanics were the ethnic group said to be hardest hit by the economic recession that kicked off in 2007. From 2009 to 2010, the poverty rate for Latinos actually increased to 26.6% from 25.3%. The national poverty rate in 2010 was 15.3%. Moreover, the median household income for Latinos in 2010 was just $37,759. In contrast, the median household income for the nation between 2006 and 2010 was $51,914. The good news for Latinos is that the amount of Hispanics without health insurance appears to be declining. In 2009, 31.6% of Hispanics lacked health insurance. In 2010, that figure dropped to 30.7%. Spanish Speakers Spanish speakers make up 12.8% (37 million) of the U.S. population. In 1990, 17.3 million Spanish speakers lived in the U.S. But make no mistake. Speaking Spanish doesnââ¬â¢t mean one isnââ¬â¢t fluent in English. The Influence Of Little Timmy On Children Essay - 1443 Words
Little Timmy had always had a relatively amazing life, he had good grades, kind parents, and a bright future ahead of him. He had recently been accepted into a great college to study engineering and had his whole life ahead of him. As the celebrations for his eighteenth birthday had died down, he wished his parents good night and returned to his bedroom in his parentsââ¬â¢ lovely, two-story home. Timmy could hardly believe that he was already a legal adult, free to do whatever he wanted, within his parentââ¬â¢s limit of course. Being an adult meant that he could do whatever he wanted Timmy thought as he put the finishing touches on his history report due the next day. Being an adult also meant that he could drink like an adult if he wanted as well. With a flash of inspiration, he ran downstairs to beg his parents for the car keys so he could enjoy his first adult beverage. His eighteenth birthday was about to become even more interesting as he began his exploration of alcohol. The kids at school would never believe what an amazing night he was going to have. In multiple countries throughout the world the legal drinking age is eighteen years old, however, in the United States, the legal drinking age is twenty-one. Despite eighteen years old being the age of a legal adult in the United States, citizens are unable to legally drink alcohol until the age of twenty-one. The History Of Sexuality By Michel Foucault - 1729 Words
The ââ¬ËWe ââ¬Å"Other Victoriansâ⬠ââ¬â¢ chapter of the book entitled ââ¬Å"The History of Sexualityâ⬠by Michel Foucault seeks to explain the traditional and modern issues regarding sexuality. Michel argues out that during the 17th century, sexuality was not a big deal, and various sexual acts were pursued more or less deliberately. Primarily, there was no taboo concerning sex and people of all age groups including children were well aware of sexual behaviours. Michel then points out that sexuality was now shifted to the homes where it was meant to become a personal matter between two exclusive partners (Foucault, 1980). As such, the society manipulated and controlled the issue of sexuality such that it became a reproductive and productive national power. For this reason, the repression of sexuality resulted in the concentration of supremacy as power became concurrently linked to leisure. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sexuality was a socially non-existent matter, a taboo, as well as, the dissertation of sexuality fell completely silent as populations continued to grow rapidly. Therefore, this paper entails a critical reflection of Michel Foucaultââ¬â¢s main arguments in this chapter. Michel argues that during the seventeenth century, people were frank about themselves more so regarding the issue of sexual practices. That is, words were expressed openly without any concealment and secrecy was something did not exist at all. As such, anybody had the right to know anythingShow MoreRelatedThe History Of Sexuality, By Michel Foucault1346 Words à |à 6 PagesIn the History of Sexuality Vol. 1, Michel Foucault writes the body as a constructed and manipulated agent, the locus of sociopolitical discourse and power. To Foucault, the body cannot exist before the law (that which holds and ascribes its meaning). Similarly, sexuality cannot free itself from relations of power (Butler 1989:603). Indeed, the body is culturally contested; it is incapable of independence from any particular structuralized narrative. Business Project Management Performance of Business
Question: Describe about the Business Project Management for Performance of Business. Answer: Introduction Below is a breakdown of its components; strategic business objective, project objective, key performance indicator, and major derivable/milestones. Strategic Business Objective Strategic objectives of a business or an organization include long haul strategy choices, for instance, starting with another plant, introducing another product in the market, expansion and so forth. Strategic planning is for the most part impacted by: the decision of broadening, i.e., extension or combination of business (Chang, 2016). Market flow, demand, and supply, technological changes, stiff competition from bigger firms in the industry, different threats in markets, difficulties and opportunities among others. Strategic objectives planning sets focuses for the workings and references for taking such long haul strategy decisions and changes the business targets into functional and operational units. With the assistance of innovations in information technology, an organization may even decide on an altogether new plan of action, which will permit it to set up, combine and keep up a strong will of sales in the current market and in addition give a competitive edge in the market and the industry at large (Hill, Charles, Gareth, Jones, Melisa, 2014). This would be achieved by indulging in market strategies including planning on extensive, efficient and effective distribution channel, advertisements through proper channels, evaluating the market participants among others. in relation to good corporate relation with consumers, may it through environmental conservation and awareness, a plant should be conversant with it in order to create a good relation with the surrounding society. At the point when a business truly knows the community they are involved with and serves them well in terms of their welfare, 'the way they need to be served,' the customers, for the most part, react by r eturning and purchasing more from the firm. It raises incomes and profits. Project Objective This project management under its objectives is to endorse a plant that is environmentally friendly, in that it reduces the risks of spillage. A plant that reduce waste streams into the environment therefore saving non renewables resources and allow production of carbon neutral energy from the byproducts. This particular projects aims at recognizing the fundamental difficulties and hindrances for decreasing plastic waste in mixed waste and lingering waste streams, thus fortifying counteractive action and reusing of plastic waste (Atkinson, 2014). Advancing and enhancing reusing of plastic polymers as a substitute for virgin plastic. Redirecting waste plastic from the remaining waste going to cremation- making a carbon unbiased vitality source- and landfill. All in all, the project conveys a commitment to the general maintainability of the plant site. Improvement of general waste management in the range; expanded reusing levels and a decrease of natural waste in landfills; acquiring a quality manure to be utilized as a fundamental revision that adds to enhance soil fertility, for instance, to stop the desertification procedure and to withhold carbon in the ground. Key Performance Indicator (KPIs) KIPs refers to a measurable value that gives the effectiveness of company activities in attainment of its set goals and objectives. This measure is used by organizations in evaluating their development and success or loss at reaching their targets (Parmenter, 2015). This measure will be applied on conservation of environment by the plant, where plants performance and attainment of goals are greatly affected by how this plant will manage its waste products from the production mainstream whatsoever. Performance indicator too will be used to evaluate the organizations performance in respect to relationship and cooperation with various stakeholders of the plant such as unions, local community, suppliers among others. Attainment of goals if affected by the latter key participants. Technological advances are key players in any organizations objectives. It is responsible for high rate of organizations growth or a stunted one depending on its availability and personnel to apply it. Depending on how an organization is performing in terms of efficient production volume, KIP will keep tract and evaluate whether or not to increase production volume taking into consideration of the initially set objectives. Major Deliverables/Milestones In project management, a deliverable is a product or a service that is given to a customer. A deliverable ordinarily has a due date, quantifiable and specific. A deliverable can be given to either an outside or inner client and fulfills a milestone or due date that is made and created in the project laid plan (Rowe, 2015). A deliverable can be a software product, a configuration record, a preparation program or other resource that is required by the project plan. Basically this are regulations set to plants such that after they are met, the provide a safe site for production in terms of variables such as security, reduction of environment contamination, demolition just in case its necessary, building and construction standards, energy source, plant design and layout under required specifications among others. All these measures are regulated and controlled by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). 2. In every project, there exist drawbacks and hindrances that are unavoidable. Generally there are common challenges that project management would faces with respect to its particulars. These include its scope, time, cost, risks, quality and procurement for this particular plant. Therefore below it follows a basic explanation of each challenge as it happens and how it affects achieving set objectives. With respect to scope, a project may have forecasted a perfect market where it could have expected high returns from its maximum sale of its products. This would not be the case if the market would change within a short duration, technology advances that renders this plants machinery outdated and also the site might get contaminated rendering it to be crossed. Time is the most crucial thing in any project. Time would be a challenge in terms of training of workforce, time taken to acquire a business permit, construction and installation of machinery delays and also EPA may take time before checking if standards were met when situating this plant. As all this is happening basically the market would still be running and other organizations would take over the market share that this project is expected to acquire. On the other hand cost is another challenge. Additional costs that arises from restricting and designing plants structures, costs of attaining business permits, soil control measures, hiring and training of new staff among others. Every business decision attracts a risk. Delays in construction and soil treatment that could lead to closure of the plant are among the list of risks that are to be faced by this project. Loss of market share is another. Breakdown of machinery or some them becoming obsolete causing them to be replaces, this would lead to increase in overhead costs. Another challenge of this project is achieving quality required by the EPA in terms of construction requirement and meeting the standards required by the corporate society. Last but not the least, procurement of plant necessities poses a challenge to this project in terms of purchase of new machinery, allocation of available funds efficiently to supplement the whole project, contracting with new suppliers, purchase and storage of raw materials and finished goods respectively (Haimes, 2015). Recommendations Any project work requires adequate diligence and dedication to ensure that the overall output is worthwhile and can be used for further references. Conclusion. The overall project proves that every input in the technological aspect ensures that there is adequate enhancement in any scientific work a researcher is undertaking. References Chang, J. F. Stock Market Pricing Efficiency in A.G. Barr Plc Share Price: The efficient market hypothesis can be regarded as the investment theory that defines that it is not possible to beat the market because stock market efficiency reflects the presence of share price to incorporate and reflect all the necessary information (Zabarankin et al., 2014). As evident recent imposition of sugar tax in UK could be viewed as semi-strong information. Stocks are regularly traded at their fair value on stock exchanges that makes it not possible for the investors to either purchase undervalued stocks or selling the stocks at the inflated price. The government announcement of sugar tax could be viewed as semi strong since the information that is obtained to predict the stock performance may well be reflected in the stock price. The information of increased sugar tax may enable the company to accelerate the long standing sugar soft drinks programme would enable the company to capitalize on the price trends of the tradable security in the market (Agbarr.Co.Uk, 2018). The central engine behind the change in price of A.G Barr plc is the arrival of the new information. As a result of this, the current prices of the securities provide all the necessary information from the external sources and consequently there is no reason behind believing that the prices are very high or too low (Blitz et al., 2015). In respect of A.G. Barr Plc, the new piece of information reflects the existence of efficient market for the investors to profit from the new information. Semi strong market form of market efficiency: Semi strong form of efficiency is considered as the efficiency market hypothesis which implies that all the public information is computed into the stock present share price. This represents that neither the fundamental nor the technical analysis could be used to attain the superior gains (Fernandez, 2017). The semi strong market efficiency provides information on the public available benefit that the investors are looking to earn through the abnormal returns on the investments. Similarly in case of A.G.Barr Plc the information of government implementation of sugar tax suggest only the information for the benefit of investors to generate the abnormal returns on the investors. The information obtained by A. G. Barr Plc is accounted into the stock price and the stock price can be classified as semi strong since the information available is obtained from the external sources (Adam et al., 2016). The stock of A. G. Barr Plc can benefit the investors that are seeking abnormal returns on investments. Valuation: Net asset Value Per Share: Particulars Amount Total Assets 2867,00,000 Total Liabilities 1745,00,000 Net Assets 1122,00,000 Nos. of Shares 115714487 Fa Dividend Discount Model (CAPM): Particulars 2017 Dividend Paid per share 0.14 Dividend Growth Rate 5.50% Cost of Capital 5.36% Fair Value of Shares under Dividend Discount Model -108.00 Net Asset Value DDM Fair Value per Share 0.97 -108.00 Market Value per Share 521.00 521.00 Remarks Overvalued Overvalued Justification and explanation of assumptions: As evident from the computations performed above an assumption can be bought forward by stating that computation under the dividend discount model for A.G. Barr Plc is performed based on the total dividend paid by the company over the last five years. Evidently, the computations performed represents that the market value of shares under the dividend discount model is overvalued (Hatemi El-Khatib, 2018). Furthermore, on considering the value derived under the net asset value it is also found that the fair value of the share prices stood 0.97 whereas the market value per share stood 521.00. Therefore, it can be stated that the both under the net asset value and dividend discount model the market value of share is overvalued. Investing in the shares of A.G. Barr Plc for the potential investors might not seem to be a feasible. However, given the consistency of dividend paid to the shareholders over the period of five years it can be stated the investing in the shares of A.G. Barr Plc could be feasible options as the food and beverage company though the other market players provide higher amount of dividend to shareholders. Usefulness and limitations of valuation methods: The dividend discount model is regarded as the useful method of valuing the stock of the company depending upon the theory that the stock of the company is worth the sum of all the value of the future dividend payments (Lazzati Menichini, 2015). The dividend discount model is useful in determining the intrinsic value of the stock and excludes the present value of the conditions. The model is useful in equating the value of the present value of shares future dividends. The net asset value per share method is the useful form of business valuation which emphases on the organizations net asset value or the fair market value of its total assets after subtracting the total liabilities in order to ascertain the amount of cost to recreate the business. The net asset method is best used in creating the financial picture of the organization through the information on the balance sheet. Considering the limitations of the Dividend discount model it fails to take into the consideration the non-dividend factors namely the brand loyalty and ownership of the intangible assets (Jordan, 2014). As all of this increases the value of the company. Furthermore, the model is reliant on the assumption that growth rate is constant and stable which in actual world is instable. On the other hand, under the net asset value method it is difficult to determine the value of intangible assets namely the property rights. Furthermore, the statement of financial position might prematurely value the assets due to the presence of depreciation. Share pricing performance: Computation of PE Ratio: Particulars Amount Market Value per share 521.00 EPS 0.31 Dividend Paid per share 0.14 P/E Ratio 1692.66 Dividend Yield Rate 0.028% As evident A.G Barr has pleased its shareholders over the period of last ten years and has paid out an average dividend of around 2.35% on the yearly basis. This is assumed that the company is able to constantly pay-out the dividend with the anticipated future pay-out ratio of around 49%. The Amicable Pension Fund can be relied upon for its dividend stocks (Sabir et al., 2016). In case of A.G. Barr Plc they have the increased dividend per share from 0.06 to 0.14 over the last ten years. The company has been constantly paying out during this time given that the dividend are increasing. Furthermore, the company is competing with the market pace and commitment.
